College admission has now been my career for nearly eight years, but ahead of jumping onto this side for the desk, I spent two years as being a school that is high in my home state of Louisiana. I was never formally the school’s ‘college therapist,’ so I was spared from having to compose hundreds upon hundreds of letters of suggestion. But during those couple of years, as a result of my role as moderator associated with scholar Council, I became in a position to get acquainted with an amount of seniors who had been going through the admission process. I am sure will leave a great number of students dissatisfied, confused, and questioning our judgment, a particular meeting with one of my favorite Student Council members is fresh shmoop.pro on my mind as we prepare to mail out decisions regarding our scholarship decisions, which.

For the sake of this story, let’s call him Scott. Scott was the superstar of our college. He had been Class President each year during highschool, he had been the pep rally emcee, and if I were to continue detailing all his accomplishments, I would go well over the word limitation that this web log allows. To top it well, he ended up being just a kid that is incredibly likeable. I got to know Scott real well since I relied on him for a great deal of what our pupil Council was expected to do. Scott had the last period of our school day down, so as my day was winding down, he’d often come by my office to hold out.

One day, with a couple of months kept in his senior year, Scott arrived by looking as bummed out when I had ever seen him. He shared he had been denied admission to his top choice college with me that. To make matters worse, one of his close friends, whom he had planned to room with on campus, had been admitted. We did not really know what to Scott to simply help him out. In ‘counseling school,’ we discovered that sometimes, the approach that is best to giving advice to some one who is depressed is always to not say anything at all, so that’s just what used to do.

When I ended up being driving home, it dawned on me personally that this rejection had been probably the first time in nearly four years that Scott had been denied one thing. He ended up being selected for each leadership position, each club, and each united group that he searched for during high school. And now, he had been told ‘No’ by a college. Any of us in Scott’s shoes would respond the same way if after years of success we were suddenly faced with what seemed such as a failure.

After pouring through hundreds upon hundreds of applications during our scholarship review process, and having to reject so numerous great pupils the chance to get a scholarship, i’d bet that lots of our applicants feel like Scott did on that day some seven years ago. My amazement at how much our applicants accomplish during their high school careers is matched by my disappointment that people can’t make it work for all of them. It’s the unsightly truth of our process, and of any competitive admission procedure, for that matter.

But let’s go back once again to Scott for an instant. Three years ago, he was visiting Los Angeles, so he and i obtained together for supper. He’d just graduated from college, where, to no shock, he had once again become a leader on the campus community, albeit at a campus that wasn’t his first choice school whenever he had been a high school senior. And I also’ll never forget what he stated when he told me personally he was hoping for: ‘I’m not worried that he hadn’t gotten into the graduate program. We’ll eventually figure it out.’ Exactly What I learned in that moment is that of all the great things Scott learned since he left school that is high the greatest of all ended up being the ability to handle rejection. He didn’t become an epic failure like he might have felt whenever he was denied from his dream school, and he had grown up so much in only a few short years.

So at the moment whenever our scholarship decisions have remaining many of you feeling a glum that is little I hope Scott’s story provides some convenience. In place of harping on the loss of a scholarship, attempt to focus on the possibilities that still lie ahead. You might not understand it now, but there are more out there than you can possibly imagine.
